/ First activities of our WP environmental team /

Even before the site inspection on July 14th with Dorothee Meier of B.A.U.M. Consult, we had established an internal WP environmental team. Ten employees from all relevant areas of the company had agreed to use their ideas and experience to actively support Wir Packen’s’ Ökoprofit (EcoProfit) program.

WP Go Green
Marcus Weyh, Roland Tachlinski, Sabine Elbin, Artem Martin, Andreas Unger, Sandra Storeck, Sarah Hillebrand, Ronald Stepponat, Angelika Neumann, and Theo Bruckmann will first gather all important data and information, and research topics that may be of interest for our company. Together with Ms. Meier, we will use them to develop a roadmap, which will lead to concrete measures that we then want to jointly implement. Until the next date in late August, the team has its hands full in order to gather ideas and make worksheets for the continuation of the tour. During the site inspection we have determined the first steps in the following areas:

Water and waste water: We will have it checked whether a different paving of our property can drain rain water better to save on rain water charges. We also want to see if water-saving aerators can be retrofitted to the hand-washing basins. This investment would pay off after a few weeks.

Residual waste: In the area of waste collection, separation, disposal, and waste reduction we have looked at various measures. First, we will compile an overview of the quantity and cost of all incidental and disposed waste and analyze this. When all the data are available, we will deal in detail with the topic of waste logistics. By separating paper and residual waste in the administration department, we have already saved a 1.1 m3 trash container. We will set up additional separators in order to optimize the separation of paper, residual waste, and DSD (take-back system). The reduction in total paper consumption by changing user behaviour will also be an issue in future.

Energy and emissions: Saving energy and reducing emissions was an important point that came up during the site inspection. Fields in which we will collect data, review existing regulations and consider changes range from lighting to ventilation, compressed air use to heating and to hot water. At the end of August, our team and Ms. Meier will resume the site inspection. The focus will then be on the areas of management and print shop. We are looking forward to see how things will develop.
